Solarpunk Futures: Perovskite and the Future of Building Facades

Inspired by recent discussions on perovskite photovoltaics and their potential to transform solar energy systems, Christiane M. Herr and Master’s student Yuqi Zhang explored how this emerging material—known for its high efficiency and transparency—could reshape urban building facades. Their research suggests that future high-rise architecture may need to move beyond conventional extrusion-based forms toward layered, sunlight-oriented geometries, where facades respond differently depending on orientation and urban context.

Their earlier study on this topic was published in 2024 and can be found here:

Prof. Billy Hau from HKU visits the Future Ecologies Group
The Future Ecologies Group hosted an exchange visit by Dr. Billy Hau Chi Hang and Dr. Joyce Siu from The University of Hong Kong on February 28th 2025. Billy has many years of experience in tree ecology and practice related work in Hong Kong, dedicating much effort to introducing more vegetation generally and especially more native trees into the dense urban environment of Hong Kong. Inspiring! This brought up questions about why practice work is not published as much as it should be, and the problem of journal article expectations effectively reducing the communication of (practice grounded) knowledge through academic channels.
